Welcome to Westboro & Hampton Park!

Once a cottage retreat in the 19th century, Westboro began as farmland and sawmills clustered around what was then called Skead’s Mills, founded by James Skead on the Ottawa River. A streetcar line later connected the village to downtown Ottawa, turning the area into a thriving industrial community. By 1949, Westboro—and the smaller Hampton Park enclave just to its south—were annexed by the City of Ottawa. Since then, these once-sleepy suburbs have evolved into some of Ottawa’s most desirable urban neighbourhoods, known for walkability, character homes, and modern infill that honours their leafy heritage.

Having lived in the Village on Winston Avenue for 20 years, I’ve watched the transformation first-hand. The changes have been incredible: new energy, new faces, and a renewed sense of community that attracts everyone from first-time buyers to retirees.

Amenities & Everyday Living in Westboro

Westboro’s main street, Richmond Road, is the heart of daily life in this popular Ottawa neighbourhood, lined with cafés, boutiques, and restaurants that give the area its village-in-the-city feel. You’ll find Happy Goat Coffee Co., Gezellig, The Barley Mow, and Fratelli among dozens of beloved local spots. The mix of independent retailers and long-standing Ottawa favourites makes Westboro one of the city’s most walkable dining districts - great for evening meals in the summer!

Hampton Park provides a quieter contrast just a few blocks south. Centred around its namesake park, a green oasis of mature trees, trails, and a fenced off-leash dog run, it offers a slower rhythm while remaining only minutes from Richmond Road’s lively strip. Together, Westboro and Hampton Park create a balanced lifestyle: upscale shopping and cafés at your doorstep, yet peaceful residential streets that still feel tucked away.

The community also acts as a gateway to Gatineau Park via the Champlain Bridge. With outfitters such as MEC and nearby paddle-and-bike shops, plus proximity to the Ottawa River, Westboro Beach, and the Remic Rapids, outdoor living is part of everyday life for many Westboro residents.

Growth & Development

Over the last two decades, Westboro has undergone steady renewal. Former industrial blocks have become modern mixed-use buildings and mid-rise condos that add density without losing the neighbourhood’s charm. Side streets now feature tasteful infill and renovated homes marrying modern design with classic red-brick foundations.

Hampton Park reflects that pattern on a smaller, more residential scale. Infill houses and reimagined bungalows now stand beside original homes built in the 1940s–1960s. The result is a mature, well-treed pocket that feels stable but forward-looking. Truly one of Ottawa’s quiet real-estate success stories!

Municipal planning continues to emphasise transit-oriented growth along Richmond Road and the forthcoming O-Train extension, keeping the area both accessible and future-proof. Westboro Beach’s new zero-carbon pavilion and the transformation of the Byron Linear Tramway into a tree-lined green corridor both reflect a neighbourhood embracing its heritage while evolving.

Homes And Property in Westboro, Ottawa

The housing mix across Westboro and Hampton Park is as diverse as its residents. Elegant renovated homes from the early and mid-20th century share streets with sleek new townhomes and boutique condos. Detached homes on generous lots remain highly sought-after, while contemporary infill appeals to professionals seeking low-maintenance urban living.

Prices here consistently outperform the city-wide benchmark, with median listing prices for detached homes in Westboro recently around the $1.1 million mark. Many properties enter the high-$900,000s to low-$1 million range, while well-finished condos and townhomes often span the $400,000 to $700,000+ range depending on size, finish, and location.

Hampton Park offers slightly more attainable entry points without sacrificing proximity or charm; ideal for families, downsizers, and anyone who values green space within minutes of downtown.

The area’s enduring appeal lies in its balance: village atmosphere, urban convenience, and a community that continues to evolve while never losing its warmth.

After 20 years living here, I can say confidently: it’s a place people fall in love with, and stay.
